How do Functional Skills qualifications work?
Functional Skills qualifications are about more than helping you to develop your skills in literacy and numeracy, such as improving your times tables or punctuation. They are also there to support you with problem solving skills for life and work. In English they are there to help you to communicate effectively, produce accurate work and analyse ideas and information. In Maths, they are there to help you to work out costs, find solutions to problems, develop budgeting skills and develop reasoning skills.
Functional Skills English is made up of three examinable elements: Reading, Writing and Speaking & Listening. The speaking and listening exams are split into two, at L1 it involves taking part in an informal small group discussion and a formal small group discussion. At L2 it involves a discussion, and giving a presentation or talk to a small group. We tend to run these exams in small groups when the group knows each other well.
